NOT MY WORK, INSPIRATION! HENRY MOORE

For UNIT 10 I created an amount of 3D sculptural models, inspired by the theme 'Knots' which I got to by starting with the word 'Connections'.

Firstly I begun to research artists to take inspiration from, and I started with my favorite artist; Henry Moore (Images above). His work inspires me massively and I love the scale in which he work in and his choice of materials. From looking at Henry Moore I then went onto making a start with my practical (Images below).

My initial idea was to work with a block of plaster and to subtract elements to hopefully have an end result of a simple knot (Drawings to the right of text are drawings I generated from looking a knots, and is what I based my carvings out of), I spent two full days on the pice above (Images above) to come to the conclusion it was too difficult and and would have as big of an impact as I had hoped, so I stopped and begun to change my plan, from subtracting materials to adding, for example working with clay and build up a shape, based on images and drawings I had generated.

To the left are the drawings I begun to generate to then take further and start working into clay to make an outcome.

When researching artists for inspiration I came across two sets of images that really caught my eye, and massively changed my idea to something quite different, but still the manipulation of a 'Knot'.

(Images below).

The artists who drew these images are unknown as I found them on Google Images, but they massively inspired me and gave me a great idea, which I then stuck with and came up with some amazing ideas (See below).

Looking at these drawings above gave me the idea to work with the 'Negative space' of a knot, which would mean to look at the shape of the inside of a knot, there are many different creative and imaginative ways to go out doing this and I chose to approach it like so; Get a hard material, such as cement, and push into a balloon and tie shut. Once securely shut, using clamps, zip ties, rope ect wrap around the balloon to misshape its natural shape, and leave to set. The nest pop the balloon and you'll be left with a unnatural shape.

To start I experimented with different mixtures to figure out which would work and be most effective. I experimented with;

First model; Sand and Cement

Second model; Cement

Third model; Sand, Cement and Plaster

I then begun to be bit more experimental with what I was creating and my ideas and pushed myself even more, and created these first three images (above).

I then bought a different style of balloon (clown molding balloons) which I then did the some process of filling it when cement and then tied it into a simple knot, which in my opinion is very affective.
